Check a translated message was really understood

Everyone nodded, and yet the thing still did not happen.

A woman and man talk across a balcony table with cups in front of them.

Ask the person to tell the plan back in their own words, and place the check on your own explanation, not on their understanding. A nod, a yes or a thumbs-up on the family WhatsApp group does not always mean the message landed. A say-it-back habit confirms it kindly.

This matters most when a message has crossed languages, such as a note for a grandparent, an instruction for a helper or a request to a relative abroad.

Why is a nod not the same as understanding?

A nod can mean “I hear you” or “I respect you”. It may not mean “I understood every word”. In a close family, saying “I did not follow” can feel like embarrassing the speaker or showing weakness.

So the polite yes shows up, and the missed task follows. Nobody lied, and nobody is at fault. The message simply did not travel whole.

How do I check without sounding like a test?

Make the check about your own explanation. “I want to be sure I said that clearly” is warm and keeps the other person’s dignity safe.

Then ask for a small action, not a yes or no. “What will you do first?” gives you more than “Is that okay?”

Try this: the say-it-back habit

Use it for any message that matters, from a hospital appointment to a Deepavali visit plan.

  1. Say or send the message in short, simple lines.
  2. Say, “I am not sure I explained that well. How would you do it?”
  3. Listen to their version without correcting straight away.
  4. Note any gap, such as a wrong day or a missing step.
  5. Fix the gap together, and say thank you for the help.
  6. Write the final plan in one place both of you can see.

If you are checking in a group chat, ask one person to reply with the plan in a sentence of their own. Do not accept only an emoji.

What if the message is too sensitive for text?

For health, money or family tension, speak in person or by voice call. Tone carries what text cannot. Our guide on agreeing what a missed call means helps when voice contact is where the worry starts.

Adapting for a busy or tired household

When people are tired, understanding drops. Do the check at a calm moment, not at the door with everyone rushing out. Even two minutes after dinner is better than a rushed hallway talk.

If you are the one translating, our guide on when one person becomes the default translator can help you share the checking, too.

A steadier voice

Checking understanding asks for patience. If you notice yourself getting short, pause for one slow breath before you speak. Our mindfulness in daily life guides have small ways to practise that, and the free slow breathing pacer sets a gentle rhythm.

This guide is part of our communication and everyday relationships guides. If a recurring misunderstanding leaves you anxious or low, it is fine to talk to a doctor or counsellor, and our support page lists where to begin.

When the check is done, you might like a few quiet minutes. Sadhguru’s free 7-minute guided meditation in the Miracle of Mind app is one optional way to take them.

Common questions

Why do people say yes when they did not understand?

Saying yes can be politeness, respect for an elder, or a wish not to cause trouble. It is not dishonesty. The fix is to make it easy to say 'I am not sure', by asking for the plan back in their words rather than asking 'Do you understand?'

Will asking someone to repeat it feel rude?

It can, if it sounds like a test. Place the check on yourself: 'I am not sure I explained that well. Can you tell me how you will do it, so I know I was clear?' That keeps the focus on your wording.

What if the person finds the message hard to read in any language?

Switch the format. Try a short voice note, a photo with an arrow, or a quick demonstration. Understanding does not have to come through text. Sit together for a moment and do the first step side by side.

How soon should I check?

Check right away, while you are still together, and again just before the task is due. The first check catches a mix-up early. The second is a light reminder, not a complaint.
